Frequently Asked Questions

What is critical thinking for teens?

Critical thinking for teenagers is a specific programme where they learn the following reasoning components in interactive sessions:

  • Argumentation and persuasion
  • Logic and logical fallacies
  • An introduction to philosophy through thought experiments
  • Cognitive biases
  • The Socratic method

I can also include learning how to avoid plagiarism and cite effectively.

Isn’t my child already learning to think critically in school?

Perhaps and if that is the case, you are one of the lucky ones. In my experience, very basic critical thinking is taught in schools. While humanities students are far more likely to develop the skill, science students often lack critical thinking skills which makes university and SATs etc harder for them. This is because the science curriculum isn’t designed to incorporate critical thinking which is why it is important to ensure your child learns it.

How would critical thinking benefit my teenager?

Entering university without having good critical thinking skills would be challenging for your child since good universities actively encourage critical thought. I learnt that it was much harder to teach it at the university level as compared to teaching it to teenagers. This is a skill best introduced early.

Critical thinking is an essential component of many standardised tests such as SATs and a teenager whose critical thinking and reasoning skills are good is more likely to do better on the SATs.

Your teenager is growing up in the fourth industrial revolution where they will be competing with AIs. As AI rapidly advances, children will need to live in a world where they can not only work with AI but compete with it. One of the most essential human skills that you can invest in is critical thinking because that is not a skill AI has developed. In fact, it is considered the most important skill of this century.

Why do you need to evaluate or assess the child before you start classes?

This is important because the level of thought varies amongst teenagers. Some are stronger thinkers than others and knowing level of thought is essential in order to create lesson plans that cater to them. Furthermore, I like to gauge what the teen’s interest are so that I can incorporate them in lesson plans.

Where do you host your classes?

Please see the general FAQs. I don’t have any spaces I host in but I would be happy to find a location to host a group or accommodate a school if they wish to have a critical thinking club. Individual classes are also helpful and successful for teenagers. I have privately tutored teenagers including on line and I would be happy to accommodate what would be most comfortable for you.

What are your charges?

I have addressed this in the general FAQs. My charges vary. However, I will update my social media and newsletter with any information on workshops with set charges.
